Leader of South Hams District Council helps Baker Estates launch construction at Sawmills development in Dartington

Baker Estates has marked the start of construction at its new Sawmills development in Dartington with a ground-breaking ceremony

Operations Director of Baker Estates, Graham Hutton was joined by Councillor Judy Pearce, Leader of South Hams District Council and Lead Member for Housing, to mark the start of construction on the site which will offer two, three and four-bedroom homes, including crucial affordable homes. This important development forms part of the Council’s drive to resolve the current housing crisis, with 30% of homes within the development being affordable homes offered to local people.

Each new home at Sawmills will be built with sustainability in mind, offering electric charging points and the addition of hundreds of solar PV systems. These important features are closely aligned with the Council’s priorities in addressing the cost-of-living crisis and the reduction of energy consumption.

Sawmills is located just west of the River Dart, surrounded by glorious countryside, with Dartington Hall and gardens located just a short distance away. As well as houses, Baker Estates is building its popular bungalows including their chalet style bungalow ‘The Holly’ at the development.

Baker Estates will be hosting their pre-launch event at The Cott Inn in Dartington, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., on Thursday 26 January for prospective buyers to look at the new development plans. The event is by appointment only.

Annie Williams, Head of Sales at Baker Estates, said: “As you would expect from this sought-after location, we have been inundated with enquiries from potential local buyers. We are thrilled to be holding our preview event at The Cott Inn at the end of January.”

“This is the first chance for prospective buyers to spend time with a Baker Estates team member and look through the plans in detail.”

Judy Pearce, Leader of South Hams District Council, said: “This development is a great example of what our Joint Local Plan can achieve at a time when increasing affordable housing and reducing energy costs is so crucial. The plan allows us to support our residents in tackling climate change and at the same time we are increasing the number of affordable houses in the area.

“With the current situation of rising fuel bills, solar energy is an effective way to reduce the impact of these increases on us. It is such a success to see these additions being implemented in affordable housing. It is a great opportunity, and we hope that our local residents will make the most of these new measures that have been put in place by Baker Estates.”
